Christmas Wreaths

Many of us choose to hang a wreath on our door at Christmas time when we decorate our homes. As well as looking festive, it lets friends, family, and neighbours know that there is ample Christmas spirit just the other side of the door! A home looks and feels so inviting when it is adorned with the wonderful greenery of a Christmas door wreath, although of course a wreath does not have to be green.

What Is a Christmas Wreath?

Christmas wreaths can be made from twigs, leaves, pine cones, artificial or dried fruit, beads, baubles, and so on. In fact, the only thing a wreath has to be is circular - the word ‘wreath’ is derived from an English word meaning ‘to twist’ into a circle.

The Origin of Christmas Door Wreaths

It is thought that the use of Christmas wreaths dates back to Roman times. Victorious athletes wore laurel wreaths at the Olympic Games as a celebration of their achievements, and that has carried through so well that still today they are intimately associated with celebrations.

When we hang them on our doors at Christmas we decorate them with ribbons, reindeer, lights, berries, holly, and anything else associated with Christmas. Traditionally, Christmas wreaths were made from evergreens and decorated with candles, so if you want to be really authentic, you can follow this theme, or tweak it to get something more practical and even more beautiful.
